Dobby: a genius at housework

Preettysandhu shared with me this liberating talk on creative genius by Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat Pray Love). In it, she speaks about the ‘genius’ or ‘creative spirit’ residing outside of our bodies. In some cultures, genius is a creature that lives in the walls, rather like Dobby the house elf in Harry Potter, she says! Believing this liberates the the artist in several ways – the artist is merely a vessel, channeling divine inspiration. If the work sucks, it’s merely because the muse didn’t perform. Or the artist didn’t catch it in time. In the end, we just have to keep showing up – keep working at it, and that is our part of the process. The rest is up to the gods!
