Throwing On The Bat (on a wheel with no pins)

March 26, 2009 § 5 Comments

I’ve been up to making some big bowls, and after my first three tries, I ran into a problem… my wet bowls kept deforming when I lifted them off! So Mr. Cheah suggested using what he calls a bat, kinda a stage for the bowl to sit on while throwing on the wheel. With that, you can remove the piece you’re working on with little grief, and then make another piece without having to wait an hour for it to dry enough to take off the wheel. Time-saving and wail-saving!

Soย  I had to find me some bats! These would have to be circular (less distracting when spinning) and sturdy pieces of wood. After some thinking and consulting, office matey Rajiv had a great idea… CAKE BASES! They were the perfect solution. Cheap, the right shape, variable sizes, the right material… yay!

A visit to the baking supplies shop in Kota Damansara (very near to chili pan mee, so me and sis always make a double stop when going there ๐Ÿ™‚ ) and I had five various cake bases which were quickly denuded. Off with their golden paper glory!

So this is how I did it…

Start with a little ball of clay, and flatten it out onto the surface

When you have a more or less flat surface, use a finger to scrape out a cross

Press on your cake base/bat. Bang to level with fist.

And after some pushing around of clay, voila! Don't forget to cut the bowl before lifting off the bat. The bowl will separate easily the next day!
